Every Australian Counts

Make sure every Australian counts

The families of Australians with disabilities are struggling with high rates of physical, emotional and financial stress because of the lack of help for their loved ones.

Many Australians with disabilities are not getting the support and services they need. And people receive different levels of support depending on how, when and where their disability was acquired.

There’s the award-winning youth counsellor who would receive more support if he didn’t work; the woman who was told she “wasn’t disabled enough” to access a service she needed; the student worried about his future as his carer parents get older; the mum exhausted by fighting bureaucracy to keep her two disabled children mobile.

A move for the future

The lives of Australians with disabilities and their families can be improved under the proposed National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This Medicare-style scheme would provide people with a disability and their families and carers with the regular care, support, therapy and equipment they need. There would be a secure and consistent pool of funds, with the aim if being efficient and effective.
