Melbourne, 20 February 2012: AustralianSuper is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Joske to the fund’s newly created role of Senior Manager, Asia. In this role, Mr. Joske will be responsible for overseeing the fund’s strategy for its increasing investments in the Asian region across all asset classes.
With $42billion in funds under management and a net cash inflow of over $3.5billion a year AustralianSuper is increasingly expanding its overseas investment capability.
Mark Delaney, AustralianSuper’s Chief Investment Officer, said that the appointment of Mr. Joske is an important part of the Fund’s investment strategy.
“We believe that investing in Asia will become increasingly important in delivering sustainable outperformance for our 1.8 million members and we are one of the first industry super funds to appoint an investment strategist on the ground in Asia to help take advantage of the growth in this region,” said Mr. Delaney.
“Over the last few years we have been steadily been growing our in-house investment expertise and are very pleased to have been able to appoint someone of Stephen Joske’s specialist expertise and experience in Asia to develop our investment strategy for the region.”
Mr. Joske joins AustralianSuper from The Economist Intelligence Unit, where he was Director of the China Forecasting Service, managing a team of expert economists and econometricians to provide advice to companies on the factors driving structural change
within the Chinese economy.
Previously, he worked at the Australian Embassy in Beijing as the Senior Australian Treasury Representative to China; as a senior analyst covering the Chinese economy for the Australian Office of National Assessments; and as Senior Adviser on macroeconomic and budget policy to the Treasurer. Mr. Joske has also represented the Australian Treasury at APEC and OECD meetings.
Mr. Joske has degrees in Economics and Asian Studies from the Australian National University and was awarded the National Economic Accounting Prize. He speaks and reads Chinese.
Mr. Joske starts with AustralianSuper on 22 February reporting to Mr Delaney.
