-
Why have I received a letter about my rollover payment from AMP to AustralianSuper? @headerType>
AMP notified AustralianSuper that between June 2018 and March 2025, they provided incorrect tax components for certain rollover payments to other super funds, including some transfers to AustralianSuper. AMP sent an apology letter titled ‘Updated tax components of your rollover payment’ to impacted members, providing the corrected tax component details.
Since being notified, AustralianSuper has completed a review to understand the impact to AustralianSuper members and any action required.
AustralianSuper has taken the steps to correct the AMP rollover payment and has outlined the impact and required action for members (if any) in the letter.
-
What is a ‘rollover’? @headerType>
A rollover is when you transfer your existing super balance (full or partial) from one super fund to another. Members may choose to rollover for various reasons, for example to consolidate multiple super accounts into one account. -
Why does my letter say I don’t need to do anything? @headerType>
If your letter says you don’t need to do anything that is because we’ve reviewed your account and can confirm that either:
- there was no financial impact to your account, and your account is now closed, so no correction to the tax components in your account was required; or
- there was no tax withheld on any withdrawals or benefit payments, so you haven’t been financially disadvantaged. Your account remains active and we’ve updated the tax components in your account so that the right amount of tax is applied to any future payments.
-
Why does my letter say I need to lodge an amended tax return? @headerType>
When we reviewed your account, we identified that a withdrawal or benefit payment was processed with an incorrect amount of tax being withheld, before we were notified and corrected the error. Details of the impacted transactions are included in the letter you received.
We’ve amended your PAYG payment summary for the financial year(s) in which the withdrawals or benefit payments occurred and a copy was enclosed with your letter for your records. We’ve also lodged the amended information with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
If you have already lodged your tax return, the ATO may need to reassess your tax position using the updated information. Lodging an amended tax return for the affected financial year(s) allows the ATO to process any refund, tax credit and applicable interest arising from the correction. You can contact the ATO on 13 28 65 or visit their website ato.gov.au
-
Why can’t AustralianSuper just refund me directly? @headerType>
The amount affected relates to tax that was withheld and reported to the ATO. Any refund, tax credit or interest arising from a correction must be processed through the ATO as part of the assessment of your income tax position. -
Did this affect my super or pension account balance? @headerType>
No, this error did not affect your super or pension account balance.
The original rollover amount transferred from AMP was not affected. The issue relates only to the tax treatment of a later withdrawals or benefit payments that may have occurred after the rollover was received.
-
How can I be sure the tax components have been corrected? @headerType>
We’ve conducted a thorough review to ensure that any member who may have been affected by this error has had the correct tax components recorded in their account.
For any member who had a withdrawal or benefit payment where the incorrect tax was withheld, we’ve provided them and the ATO with a corrected PAYG payment summary. If you have already lodged your tax return, the ATO may need to reassess your tax position using the updated information. Lodging an amended tax return for the affected financial year(s) allows the ATO to process any refund, tax credit and applicable interest arising from the correction.
For members who have made a full or partial rollover from their account we’ve provided them and their rollover fund with a corrected Rollover Benefit Statement. The rollover fund will determine if there is any impact and contact members if required.
-
How do I lodge an amended tax return? @headerType>
You can request an amendment through your myGov account linked to the ATO, through your registered tax agent, or by contacting the ATO on 13 28 65. -
Do I have to lodge an amended tax return? @headerType>
Only if your letter tells you to. If you would like the ATO to consider the corrected withholding information and determine whether you are entitled to a refund, tax credit or interest, you should lodge an amended tax return for the affected financial year(s).
If your letter says you don’t need to do anything, you don’t need to lodge an amended tax return.
-
Will interest be paid on the refund amount? @headerType>
If you receive a refund/tax credit, the ATO will calculate any interest on the amount incorrectly withheld and include it in the refund or credit amount. Search ‘Interest on overpayments’ at ato.gov.au for more information. -
Can I get a corrected PAYG payment summary? @headerType>
If the incorrect tax was withheld on your withdrawal or benefit payment as a result of this error, we enclosed a corrected PAYG payment summary with the letter you received. If you need another copy, please email MemberRemediations@australiansuper.com or call us on 1300 300 273 and mention ‘FND-1739 AMP Rollover Error’ in your email or call.
We recommend you keep your letter and corrected PAYG payment summary for your reference.
-
Why have I received more than one letter correcting an impacted withdrawal or benefit payment from my account? @headerType>
We’ve conducted a review of any withdrawals or benefit payments from your account that may have been impacted by the incorrect tax information provided with your rollover payment from AMP.
If more than one withdrawal or benefit payment from your account was impacted, you may receive more than one correction letter enclosing a corrected PAYG payment summary, we’re sorry for any inconvenience.
-
Did this issue affect my tax reporting? @headerType>
Yes, the tax reporting sent from AustralianSuper to the ATO was affected by this error, however we have provided corrected tax component information to the ATO and recorded this in your account. -
Why has it taken this long to fix the error? @headerType>
We’ve been working with AMP since they notified us of the error to ensure we have all the required information to conduct a thorough review to identify and correct the tax components for all affected members.
We apologise it has taken some time to complete the review and correction, and for any inconvenience caused.
