AustralianSuper's retirement research shows there are four key things that shape how confident Australians feel about retirement:

  • Goal setting and planning
  • Financial behaviour and literacy
  • Social and mental health
  • Physical health

The research also shows retirement confidence lifts once Australian's officially retire, increasing by 9%.

Actively engaging in retirement planning and setting clear goals can significantly boost confidence and positive feelings towards retirement.

Financial behaviour and literacy

Being able to effectively manage your finances, including paying off debts, is essential for building confidence in your retirement. Continuing to receive a reliable income during retirement is equally important.  

Social and mental health

Maintaining good social connections and mental wellbeing enhances retirement confidence and contributes to a sense of longevity.

Physical health

Although playing a smaller role in retirement confidence, maintaining good physical health is also an important element that contributes to retirement confidence.
