Check your eligibility for a DASP
If you've earned super while working in Australia on a temporary visa, you may be eligible to be paid it as a ‘departing Australia superannuation payment’ (DASP) after you leave.
You’re eligible if all of the following apply:
- you were paid super while working in Australia on an eligible temporary resident visa (under the Migration Act 1958, excluding subclasses 405 and 410)
- your visa has expired or has been cancelled and you don’t hold another active Australian visa
- you've left Australia permanently, and
- you're not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident.
How to apply for a DASP online
Important tip: You can only submit your application online after leaving Australia, but it’s a good idea to start preparing the paperwork before you leave, especially if you need to certify your identification (ID) documents.
Checklist: Before you leave Australia
Get a certified copy of your passport (if your super balance is $5,000 or more):
- Your passport must be certified and dated within the last 6 months. We’ll ask for this paperwork once we’ve received your DASP application from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
- It’s easier to have your passport certified in Australia. Read the ‘Physical Certification’ section in the Providing proof of your identity fact sheet for instructions.
- If your passport isn’t in English, you must provide a written translation that an authorised translation service has certified. Authorised services include:
- an appropriate embassy, or
- a professional translation service accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd.
Check your personal details
Make sure your AustralianSuper account details (such as your full name and date of birth) match your passport. You can do this by using the AustralianSuper mobile app or by logging into your account online. If they don’t, please complete the Change my details form or contact us.
Check that your employer has paid all of your super contributions and they’ve been received into your AustralianSuper account.
Consider keeping your Australian bank account open for the electronic funds transfer (EFT) payment.
Checklist: After you leave Australia
Complete and submit your DASP application online through the ATO. This free service is the quickest and easiest way to apply.
Cancel your visa
If your visa hasn't expired or been cancelled, you must cancel it through the Department of Home Affairs before submitting your application.
The ATO online application will require the following information:
- Name.
- Email address.
- Passport number and country of issue.
- Australian tax file number (TFN) − optional. Providing your TFN helps the ATO to find all super accounts linked to you, including any lost or unclaimed super. This helps make sure you don’t miss any of your retirement savings, even if you have multiple accounts or changed jobs frequently.
- AustralianSuper account details, including your member number and AustralianSuper’s ABN: 65 714 394 898.
ATO eligibility check
Once you’ve lodged your online application with the ATO, they’ll confirm your eligibility for a DASP with the Department of Home Affairs. If your application is approved, it will be sent to AustralianSuper for processing.
Certified passport requirement (if your super balance is $5,000 or more)
Upload a certified copy of your passport to AustralianSuper.
If you didn’t get your passport certified in Australia, you can have it certified overseas by a:
- Australian consular officer or an Australian diplomatic officer
- Notary Public
- Justice of the Peace
- Registrar or deputy registrar of a court
- Judge of a court.
Read the ‘Physical Certification’ section in the Providing proof of your identity factsheet for more information.

What happens if you don’t apply for a DASP @headerType>
If you don’t submit your DASP application within 6 months of leaving Australia or your visa expiring, we’ll generally transfer your super to the ATO as unclaimed monies. Once with them, it’ll generally grow more slowly because interest is indexed to the consumer price index (CPI) but you’re not charged fees. Your money isn't lost though – you can still claim it through the ATO’s online application.
