What is a KiwiSaver transfer?

If you're moving to New Zealand, you may be able to transfer your AustralianSuper balance to a KiwiSaver account. This can help you keep your retirement savings in the one place and make them easier to manage.

Check your eligibility first

To transfer your AustralianSuper account to a KiwiSaver account:

• you must have an active KiwiSaver account
• your KiwiSaver provider must be able to accept transfers from Australia
• you must have permanently moved to New Zealand
• you must transfer your entire AustralianSuper balance to your KiwiSaver account.

What happens once the transfer is done?

If your transfer is approved, your AustralianSuper balance will be transferred to your KiwiSaver account. Keep in mind, once the transfer is complete, your AustralianSuper account will close and any insurance cover linked to that account will stop.

Have Member Direct investments?

Before you apply to transfer to KiwiSaver, it’s best to sell your Member Direct investments and close your Member Direct account. Otherwise, we'll need to do this for you as part of the transfer process, which will result in delays. Keep in mind, if you withdraw a term deposit before maturity, a reduced interest rate may apply.

Documents you’ll need to apply

Proof of residence in New Zealand

If your proof of identity document doesn’t have your current New Zealand address, you’ll need to provide us with another document which has your address. This could include a:

• utility bill
• council rates notice
• bank document.

Keep in mind, the document you supply must be less than 12 months old.

Letter of compliance

You will need to provide a letter of compliance from your KiwiSaver account. This letter must confirm the account’s postal address, registration numbers, and receiving bank account details that you’ve provided in steps 2 and 3 of the Transfer your AustralianSuper account to your KiwiSaver form. To get your letter of compliance, contact your KiwiSaver provider.

Statutory declaration

To confirm that you have permanently emigrated to New Zealand, you must provide a statutory declaration. You can provide either a New Zealand Statutory Declaration or a Commonwealth of Australia Statutory Declaration.

Option 1: New Zealand Statutory Declaration

You can complete the New Zealand Statutory Declaration provided in the Transfer your AustralianSuper account to your KiwiSaver form, stating you have permanently emigrated to New Zealand.

The declaration must be signed in front of a qualified person allowed to witness statutory declarations. This includes:

• New Zealand Justices of the Peace
• notary public
• Judges
• Judges of the Maori Land Court
• Lawyers, including Barristers and Solicitors of the High Court.

Option 2: Commonwealth of Australia Statutory Declaration

Alternatively, you can provide a Commonwealth of Australia Statutory Declaration. This type of a declaration made in New Zealand is usually witnessed by an Australian Consular Officer, Australian Diplomatic Officer (within the meaning of the Consular Fees Act 1955) or a Notary Public appointed and practicing in New Zealand (there may be a charge).

Proof of identity

You’ll need to provide one of the following proof of identity documents:

• certified copy of your current driver’s licence, or
• certified copy of your current passport.

How to certify your documents

1. Organise your documents

Make photocopies of your proof of identity documents. If you're using your driver's licence and your address appears on the back, you'll need to photocopy both sides. Take both the original documents and photocopies to someone authorised to certify documents.

2. Get your ID certified in New Zealand

People with the following occupations can certify your documents in New Zealand:

• Registered medical doctor
• Registered teacher
• Justice of the Peace
• Lawyer
• Notary public (there may be a charge)
• Chartered accountant
• Kaumātua
• Member of the police

The certifier must:

1. Compare the photocopy to the original document.
2. Include the following details on the copy:
• stamp or write 'I have sighted the original document and certify this to be a true and correct copy of the original document'
• their occupation
• their name
• their address and phone number
• their signature and the date it was signed.

Submitting your forms

Once everything is complete, upload the signed certified copies of your identity documents, proof of residence, letter of compliance and statutory declaration, along with your completed Transfer your AustralianSuper account to your KiwiSaver form.
