Managing investments in uncertain times

Chief Investment Officer Mark Delaney provides an update on what AustralianSuper is focusing on to help build members retirement savings during these uncertain times.

In the current environment, AustralianSuper’s investment priorities are clear: To navigate market volatility and position the portfolio for long-term growth. To do this the Fund is focused on 3 things: building diversified portfolios, monitoring investment markets, and looking for new investment opportunities which could provide long-term growth for members.

Find out more on each of these focuses in the video below.

Investment focuses – a recap

1. Managing diversified investment portfolios

Diversification is a common investment strategy that combines different types of assets in a portfolio to reduce overall risk. Think of it as spreading your eggs across different baskets, rather than having them all in one.

AustralianSuper’s PreMixed Options offer members diversified portfolios. They combine a range of asset classes such as shares, infrastructure and property, to reduce risk.

2. Actively monitoring markets and the economy

The Fund’s investment decisions are guided by a range of data including:

  1. Traditional economic data: This includes production, employment and GDP growth indicators. This type of information often looks historically at previous months, helping to understand what has happened.
  2. Real-time data and forward-looking surveys: These help us understand what’s currently happening, and what’s likely to happen soon. Surveys often look at consumer and business confidence, across metrics like investment, recruitment and consumption intentions.

Looking at these data points gives the Fund’s Investment team a clearer idea of how quickly consumers and businesses are starting to resume normal activity. This then provides an indication on how quickly the economy can be expected to recover.

3. Sourcing new investment opportunities

AustralianSuper’s Investment team continually look for new investment opportunities to grow returns for members over the long-term. Many of these opportunities are in Australia, where our investments will also have the benefit of supporting Australian companies and contributing to the Australian economy.
